Description
The soldiers who rebelled against their officers, from the army, in the
Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Dhaka Wednesday morning were yet to surrender
their arms till 3:00am Thursday despite two rounds of negotiations and the prime
minister’s announcement of a general amnesty. Heavy gunshots and frequent
grenade explosions rocked the BDR headquarters during the rebellion in which at
least five, including two army officers, were reported killed till the evening,
officials said. No figure on the number of people killed or held hostage
inside the headquarters could be established. None of the rebels or the
authorities could provide any such figure. Red Crescent Society officials
at about 3:00am entered the headquarters to take out the women and children
trapped inside as the soldiers agreed to set them free.
